Sculpted from a barren piece of reclaimed land, Tanah Merah Country Club is the result of the concerted effort of a group of Singaporeans dedicated to the creation of one of the finest golf clubs in the region. Building the Garden Course proceeded at full tilt throughout 1981.
It was completed after four years of planning and construction. The planners did not miss the opportunity to maximise all available resources. Artificial lakes were excavated and mounds were created for both visual interest and an element of challenge for the golfers.
The Garden was renovated almost 10 years later in 1992 by Max Wexler, in collaboration with Club Captain Tan Puay Huat. Much of the layout remains. However, major changes were made to improve drainage and irrigation network, re-contour fairways and greens and return fairways and tees to the hardier ‘king of grasses’ – Zoysia Matrella, a suggestion by then club Captain Tan Puay Huat.
In 2004, Garden commenced its 2-year redevelopment by renowned golf course designer, Phil Jacobs in collaboration with Club President Tan Puay Huat. The newly redeveloped course was open in 2006; and the layout is a major change from its predecessor but retains the “GARDEN” touch with mature trees, multi-hued shrubs and a huge variety of tropical foliage and lakes.
